Cunard
Cunard Cruises - 'Most Famous Ocean Liners in the World'
Cunard Cruises operate some of the most famous cruise liners in the world - notably the Queen Mary 2 and the Queen Elizabeth 2 (usually referred to as the QE2) and has attracted a loyal following during its long and established cruising history. Embodying the 'Golden Age of Cruising', the company evokes a time when cruising was the height of glamour, and its cruise ships still offer a white glove service and operate classic cruising traditions.
Cunard Cruises - Long established history; upholding classic cruising traditions
The cruise line boasts a long history, and dates back to 1839, when the shipping magnate Samuel Cunard founded the British and North American Royal Mail Steam Packet Company, which in turn won the contract to deliver the mail across the Atlantic. The company soon became Cunard Steamships Ltd, and began a passenger and cargo service, prospering throughout the 20th century and gaining a reputation for reliability and safety whilst dominating the transatlantic cruise market. In 1998, Cunard Cruises became part of the Carnival Corporation, which also owns a variety of cruise lines including Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, Carnival Cruise Line, P&O Cruises and Costa Cruises. The Cunard cruise line is made up of three ships - the Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth 2 and the Queen Victoria, the newest of the fleet which replaced the Queen Elizabeth in 2007. Cunards' Queen Mary 2, christened in 2004 by the Queen, was the largest, longest and most expensive ship ever built, and became the flagship of the cruise line.
